We build aluminum boats, so treat what follows accordingly — but the honest answer is that fiberglass is the better choice for a meaningful number of buyers, and pretending otherwise wastes everyone's time.
Weight, and everything that follows from it
Aluminum is dramatically lighter. A 16 ft aluminum hull can weigh less than half its fiberglass equivalent, and that single fact cascades through the entire ownership experience: a smaller tow vehicle, a lighter trailer, less fuel burned both towing and running, a smaller outboard for the same performance, and a boat one person can push off a ramp.
The same lightness is the main drawback. Less mass means a rougher ride in chop and more sensitivity to wind at rest. Fiberglass boats settle into rough water; aluminum boats work across the top of it.
Impact damage behaves differently
This is the difference that matters most in practice. Hit a rock in aluminum and you dent it. The boat is ugly and still watertight, and you keep fishing. Hit the same rock in fiberglass and you crack or hole the gelcoat, which means water intrusion and a shop repair.
For shallow rivers, rocky lakes, gravel bars, stumps, and ice, aluminum is not merely preferable — it is the only sensible choice. For deep open water where you rarely touch bottom, that advantage largely disappears.
Maintenance
Aluminum asks very little. There is no gelcoat to oxidize, chalk and buff, no osmotic blistering, and a bare or painted aluminum hull left outdoors for a decade is cosmetically tired but structurally sound.
It does require attention to galvanic corrosion. Aluminum in contact with dissimilar metals in water corrodes, so sacrificial anodes matter, particularly in salt water, and stainless fasteners in an aluminum hull need proper isolation. Fiberglass simply does not have this failure mode.
Ride and noise
Fiberglass wins here and it is not close. It can be molded into deep-V hulls with complex compound curves that cut chop; aluminum's flat panels resist that shaping. Fiberglass is also markedly quieter — aluminum transmits wave slap and footfall, which matters if you are stalking fish or hunting.
Modern aluminum construction narrows the gap with heavier gauges, foam insulation and better hull design, but it does not close it.
Cost over time
Aluminum is usually cheaper to buy at a given length, and the gap widens over ownership: less fuel, cheaper trailering, minimal maintenance. Aluminum fishing boats also hold value stubbornly well — a 20-year-old aluminum hull in sound condition still sells, where a fiberglass boat of the same age has usually depreciated much harder unless meticulously kept.
Repairability
Aluminum can be welded. A torn hull is repaired by a competent welder, often locally and often cheaply, and the repair is as strong as the original. Fiberglass repair is a skilled trade — layup, fairing, gelcoat matching — and a cosmetically invisible repair is expensive.
Choose aluminum if
- You fish shallow, rocky or stump-filled water
- You tow with a mid-size vehicle, or launch alone
- You want minimal maintenance and long service life
- You need a hunting, utility or work boat
- You want a custom size — aluminum is far cheaper to build one-off
Choose fiberglass if
- You run big open water where ride quality dominates
- You want the quietest possible boat
- Finish and styling matter as much as function
- You are building a family cruiser or watersports boat
Where we land
For fishing, hunting, utility work and shallow water, aluminum is the better tool and costs less to own. For open-water comfort and refinement, buy fiberglass and enjoy it.
