A boat trailer spends its life doing something no other vehicle does: it gets driven at highway speed until the hubs are hot, then reversed into cold water. Almost every roadside failure traces back to that one fact, or to the fact that trailers sit unused for months and people mistake stillness for wear resistance.
Three components account for the overwhelming majority of problems. Here is what goes wrong with each.
Wheel bearings: the one that strands you
Bearings are the most common trailer failure and the most preventable. The mechanism is simple. Towing heats the hub. Backing into water cools it rapidly, the air inside contracts, and the resulting vacuum draws water past the seal. Water displaces grease, grease stops protecting the rollers, and the bearing fails — sometimes hundreds of miles later, which is why people rarely connect cause and effect.
What to do: repack bearings roughly once a season or every couple of thousand miles, whichever comes first, and more often if you launch in salt water. Bearing protectors that maintain slight positive pressure in the hub help considerably, but they are not a substitute for repacking — they slow water ingress, they do not eliminate it.
The early warning: on any long tow, stop after the first 20 minutes and put your hand near each hub. Warm is normal. Too hot to hold is a bearing telling you it has perhaps an hour left. A hub that is noticeably hotter than the other three is the one to worry about. Catching it here is a roadside repack; missing it is a seized bearing, a scored spindle, and possibly a wheel departing the trailer.
Carry a spare hub assembly, or at minimum a bearing and seal kit, on any trip far from home. The part is inexpensive; being stranded with a loaded boat is not.
Tires: they age out before they wear out
This is the failure people are most surprised by. A boat trailer might cover a few hundred miles a year, so the tread looks nearly new after a decade. The rubber, meanwhile, has been degrading the entire time — UV, ozone and heat cycling break it down from the inside regardless of use.
Check the date, not the tread. Every tire carries a DOT code ending in four digits: the week and year of manufacture. "3219" means the 32nd week of 2019. Most guidance retires trailer tires at around five to six years from that date irrespective of remaining tread, and a tire that has spent its life outdoors in strong sun deserves the shorter end of that.
Use trailer-rated tires. Tires marked ST (Special Trailer) have stiffer sidewalls built for vertical load rather than cornering. Fitting passenger-car tires to a trailer is a common shortcut and a bad one — they flex more, build heat, and are a genuine sway risk under load.
Pressure matters more than on a car. Trailer tires are designed to run at their maximum sidewall pressure, checked cold. Underinflation is the leading cause of trailer blowouts because a soft tire generates heat rapidly under load. Check before every significant trip, not once a season.
Do not forget the spare. It is aging on the same clock as the others, and discovering it is flat happens at the worst moment.
Lights and wiring: submerged electrics
Trailer lighting is asked to survive repeated immersion, which is an unreasonable request of any electrical system. Corrosion at the connections is what usually fails, not the bulbs.
Sealed LED units are a straightforward upgrade. They draw less current, last far longer, and the good ones are genuinely potted against water. They also come on instantly, which is a small but real safety gain in traffic.
Protect the connections. Dielectric grease on every plug and ground, heat-shrink connectors rather than crimp-and-tape, and a ground wire run properly back to the vehicle rather than relying on the coupler and ball for a ground path. Most "faulty light" problems are actually a poor ground.
Unplug before you launch where practical. Hot bulbs and filaments hitting cold water is hard on them, and it costs nothing to disconnect at the ramp.
Test the full set — running lights, brakes, indicators — before every trip. It takes thirty seconds with someone standing behind, and lighting faults are among the most common reasons a trailer gets pulled over.
The rest of the walkaround
- Rinse after salt water. Every time, and not just the hull — the frame, the springs or torsion arms, the lights and the wiring. Salt left on a trailer works while the trailer sits.
- Bunk carpet. When it wears through, the staples and the timber underneath meet your hull. Replace it before that happens.
- Winch strap. Fraying is a visible warning. It is the cheapest part of the rig and the one holding your boat on.
- Coupler and safety chains. Check the latch actually engages and locks, and that the chains are crossed under the tongue so they cradle it if the coupler releases.
- Brakes, if fitted. Surge couplers seize and electric brake magnets corrode. Test them somewhere safe at low speed at the start of each season.
A realistic schedule
Before every trip: tire pressure cold, lights, coupler latched, chains crossed, straps sound.
Every long tow: hub temperature check after the first 20 minutes.
Each season: repack bearings, inspect brakes, check bunk carpet, inspect wiring, check tire dates.
After every salt launch: rinse thoroughly, frame and electrics included.
