We build our boats in Upland, California, so we get asked one question more than any other from local buyers: where can I actually take a 12–16 ft aluminum boat around here? Quite a few places. Here are the Southern California lakes that suit a small jon or utility boat, and the rules you need to know before you tow.
First: the inspection rule
Nearly every Southern California reservoir runs a quagga and zebra mussel inspection at the ramp, and many require the boat to arrive clean, drained and dry — some issue a seal after each visit so a return trip is faster. A fully dry aluminum hull with the drain plug out passes easily. Check the lake's current inspection hours before you leave; several close the inspection station before the ramp closes.

Salt water within reach
