Aluminum boats are easier to winterize than fiberglass ones — there's no gelcoat to blister and no wood stringers to rot — but "easier" doesn't mean "nothing to do." Skip the trailer bearings or leave water sitting in a livewell through a hard freeze, and you'll pay for it in the spring. Here's what actually matters, roughly in order of importance.
The short version
If you only have an afternoon, these five things cover most of the risk:
- Wash the hull and flush the outboard
- Stabilize the fuel and fog the engine, or have a shop do it
- Pull the battery or put it on a maintainer
- Repack the trailer wheel bearings and check tire pressure
- Store the boat covered, bow slightly high, with the drain plug out

Wash and dry the hull first
Aluminum doesn't rust the way steel does, but 5052 marine-grade aluminum — the alloy used in hulls like ours — still corrodes if salt, algae, or trapped moisture sit on it all winter. Rinse the hull with fresh water inside and out, and pay extra attention to rivet lines and seams. A riveted hull has more seams than a welded one, and that's exactly where grime and moisture like to collect. Let everything dry completely before you cover the boat; trapping moisture under a cover is worse than leaving it uncovered. Handle the outboard properly
This is the step people skip and regret. In general: run fuel stabilizer through the system if the boat will sit for more than a month or two, especially with ethanol-blended gas; fog the cylinders per the engine's fogging procedure; change the lower unit gear oil and check it for a milky color, which signals water intrusion and means it needs service before it sits; and flush the cooling system with a flush kit or earmuffs. The exact steps vary by engine make and model, so follow your outboard manufacturer's owner's manual or have a marine mechanic winterize it for you. It's inexpensive insurance against a no-start in the spring.
Don't forget the battery
A battery left connected and idle over winter will self-discharge and can freeze once it's low enough — a frozen battery is often a dead battery. Disconnect it, store it somewhere dry and above freezing, and put it on a trickle charger or smart maintainer if you have one. If you're not sure whether your battery is lead-acid or lithium, check the manufacturer's storage guidance, since the two chemistries are cared for differently.
Prep the trailer, not just the boat
Most spring breakdowns start with the trailer, not the boat. Bearings that sit unused for months are more prone to seizing and corrosion, and tires can develop flat spots from sitting in one position under load. Repack or at least inspect the wheel bearings before storage, and if the trailer will sit for the whole off-season, consider chocking it on jack stands to take weight off the tires. Release parking brakes if equipped so pads don't seize to the drums, and grease the coupler. Where and how you store the boat matters
Before you figure out storage, it helps to know your footprint. Approximate dimensions and weight for our three hull lengths:

Covered storage — a garage, carport, or fitted cover — beats leaving a boat exposed to sun and snow load, but ventilation matters as much as coverage. A cover pulled tight with no airflow traps condensation underneath it, which is how you end up with mildew on seats and a musty cabin in spring. Prop the bow slightly higher than the stern so any water that does get in drains out the back, and pull the drain plug for the whole off-season so nothing can collect and freeze.
Before you launch again in spring
A short pre-season check saves you from finding problems at the ramp with a line of trucks behind you: reinstall the drain plug, confirm the battery holds a charge, check trailer tire pressure and inspect the sidewalls for winter cracking, re-grease bearings if the boat sat for several months, test all trailer lights, and give the hull a once-over for anything that shifted or corroded while it sat.
When it's not worth nursing along anymore
If you're chasing the same corrosion spots every spring, or the trailer's bearings and tires need replacing more years than not, it's worth doing the math on repair cost versus a fresh setup rather than defaulting to another round of patchwork.
